Coco Chanel once said that ‘luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury’. But often in our deep desire to feel spoiled and special, we forget these wise words. We forget what it is to feel truly indulged. Chalet Les Anges is different. It takes all the elements you would expect from five-star luxury accommodation and offers you even more in return. Like Ms Chanel, Chalet Les Anges believes in comfort. That is how it has come to be one of the world’s most exclusive, elite and luxurious properties.
Everything about Chalet Les Anges or ‘The Angels’ makes you feel discreetly spoiled. From its prime setting in Le Petit Village, one of the most sought-after postal addresses in Zermatt, to the breathtaking scenery, this special property is your own personal paradise. Facing the majestic Matterhorn Mountain and overlooking the picturesque town of Zermatt, Chalet Les Anges is ideally located in the German speaking area of Canton of Valais. It sits at the closest point to the town – the town centre is only a ten-minute stroll away - yet still maintains the high degree of privacy that makes it a favourite destination for all guests.
Designed by renowned interior architect Magali de Tscharner, Chalet Les Anges exudes an understated luxury. Drawing on her keen sense of style, de Tscharner’s design is a wonderful combination of contemporary chic and timeless elegance. Inspired by the understated charm of Zermatt itself, de Tscharner’s design set out to reflect the greatness and natural beauty of the surrounding area. Through carefully planned spacious rooms and the incorporation of floor to ceiling windows, de Tscharner succeeded in opening up the chalet to the magnificent Matterhorn Mountain and combined the different textures and colours of high-quality natural fabrics and furnishings to enhance the feeling of decadence and comfort.
The chalet extends to 750m² and stretches over three stunning floors. Natural light floods the property while the panoramic views of the spectacular surrounds bring you into the heart of the mountain and the reclaimed antique oak flooring used in and outside of the chalet creates an old-world feel. The wonderfully spacious living area exemplifies this focus. “I opted for a vertical installation of old dark wood over walls and a striped rug to amplify the height of the room”, de Tscharner explains. “The effect of this rough old wood contrasts brilliantly with the gloss lacquer of the baby grand piano and the decorative grey tadelakt applied on the open fire. These materials respond in kind to the shine of the lacquered Christophe Delcourt designed side tables placed in between the sofas.”
Bespoke and limited edition furnishings and fabrics are used throughout Les Anges. All these textures and carefully chosen furnishings and colour palettes add the final lavish touch to each room while the careful mix of natural and atmospheric lighting creates the perfect ambiance.
The chalet accommodates up to 14 people and provides 24-hour service and amble space to suit even the most social of guests. The warmth and comfort of the living area is only bettered by the fantastic terrace it opens out onto; ideally southern facing, this terrace seems to float in the blue sky with the valley below and the mighty mountain above. With barbeque and outdoor dining table and benches clad with warm and comfortable sheep and mountain goat skins, this is the perfect setting for summer dining and sunny winter lunches.
And what better way to relax than in the warmth of the terrace’s all-year power jet plunge pool to watch the sun set behind the Matterhorn? Or retreat to the chalet’s extensive wellness area that guarantees to leave you feeling utterly indulged. With sauna, hamman, massage room and relaxation area, this first-class facility provides all the essential ingredients to help refresh and rejuvenate both body and mind.
At Chalet Les Anges, the attention to detail is second to none and the opulent interior is carried through to the seven seductive twin and double bedrooms. Named after ancient gods and guardian angels, these enticing ensuite rooms further add to the sense of Heaven on Earth.
Private balconies offer incredible views across Zermatt to the Matterhorn, while glass doors enable direct access to the terrace and plunge pool. The bed linen and spreads, from the highly regarded Slabbinck Home Creations, are of impeccable quality and timeless design and add a beautiful decorative touch to each room.
From the heated boot facility in the ski room to the luxurious Italian marble finish in the wellness area, no detail is too small or insignificant. Everything required to make your stay as comfortable as possible is located under one lavish roof.
Your comfort is paramount at Chalet Les Anges, and, for your convenience, the staff will be on hand to cater for your every whim. From chaufferred cars to and from the airport, an experienced child-minding service, private ski lessons, or a masseuse to soothe those aching muscles after the slopes can all be arranged upon your request, while fresh flowers, daily newspapers, delicious children’s meals or a spontaneous glass of Champagne as you relax in the Jacuzzi while gazing at the stars or in front of the fire, is all part of the exceptional service that you can expect daily when you stay in this premier property.
Four dedicated, experienced and highly skilled staff, carefully selected and fully trained by the acclaimed Greycoats Academy, are also on hand for the duration of your stay. Your personal chalet manager and professional chef are ready for whatever you should require, whether it is a pampering treatment, seven-course gourmet dinner or dining reservation. This personalised care plan often surpasses the first-class standards of the best five-star hotels. Wining and dining at the chalet is another delightful experience, with each delectable dish taking you on a journey of the senses. As part of the Elysian Collection, Chalet Les Anges employs the best-of-the-best from the culinary world and only the most experienced and qualified chefs, all of whom are Michelin trained, make it into the chalet’s kitchen.
The key ingredient is always quality and executive chef, Angeline Davies, believes in letting the ingredients speak for themselves. Through her extensive knowledge of local produce, she can create such sumptuous dishes as braised rabbit, home-cured local river trout and a scallop and morilles mushroom ragout that is sure to seduce even the most discerning palates. Each dish is ‘balanced in flavour and texture and delights the taste buds with its evident beauty and naturalness’, Davies explains. And with a seven-course, lavish dining experience prepared by the chef six nights a week, you will dine as never before.
Like everything in the chalet, Davies’ kitchen is beautifully designed in stainless steel with Viking appliances and is gadget free. It is situated next to the dining room - a tasteful room that is subtly lit and finished in dark wood with plush velvet chairs and dining table by Christophe Delcourt. It can accommodate a romantic dinner for two or an evening’s entertaining and offer a menu that is perfect for both. The food is heavenly, and the accompanying wine list is equally divine. As with the food, Les Anges’ wine list places its emphasis on the local, which is no surprise as there are such a huge number of small boutique vineyards marking the journey towards Zermatt and all produce some real gems.
The a la carte wine list also boasts some carefully selected French classics, top Italian vintages, and great New World varieties and, of course, the delicious house champagne, Perrier-Jouet. You can request your own favourite bottle if it is not already on the wine list, or let the chalet’s sommelier help you choose the perfect wine accompaniment to your meal. Zermatt has come a long way from its modest farming beginnings. Today, this idyllic car-free town is truly a premier destination attracting an equally elite cliental from across the globe. Like the chalet itself, Zermatt exudes a discreet luxury. There is nothing gaudy or garish about this location. It is simply charming.
Zermatt is a place where you linger over lunch, pour over high fashion, vintage and antiques designs in luxury boutiques, sample local artisan products and take a horse-drawn sleigh from one magical street to the next. The place exudes an undeniable air of sophistication. Skiers recognise Zermatt for what it truly is – paradise. Apart from the spectacular scenery, Zermatt’s slopes are famous for their snow reliability factor when even in seasons of low snowfall the 313km of groomed piste stay open. It is also the home of Europe’s longest ski run (13km), an incredible vertical decent of 2,200m, and picturesque pine-shrouded forests. In summertime, Zermatt bursts with life and offers visitors pure escapism where hours can be whiled away exploring endless trails or travelling two-wheeled across miles of mountain bike trails.
All the while, Les Anges is perfectly located for access to walking routes and bike trails while still maintaining enough privacy to allow you to soak up the summer sun in peace and quiet. It is comfort and it is luxurious. It is Heaven on Earth.
